About
My research focuses predominantly upon the sociology of culture and specifically i work in the areas of popular culture, new media and sound. I am currently exploring the potential of popular culture for expanding the methodological, conceptual and communicative repertoire of sociology and the social sciences. One of the things i'm focusing on at the moment is the potential of new forms of digital by-product data for doing social science.
In very general terms my work explores the material and everyday aspects of culture. This has led to work on iPods and mobile music; participatory web cultures; new movements in popular music; The Wire and other forms of the sociological imagination as popular culture; celebrity gossip; consumer culture and production; RFID tags, software dense urban infrastructures and trackable objects; the power of algorithms to shape opportunities and experiences; and noise and sounds in the urban and domestic context.
