About
My research focuses on the development of the urban space within which neighbourhoods developed in the medieval period (c.600-1600). This project forms part of an AHRC funded Doctoral Collaborative Award between the University of York and York Archaeological Trust entitled 'Possessions, consumption and choice: three studies of the material culture of domestic goods in York and Yorkshire'. My research is developing a methodology of using GIS to analyse and draw together published and unpublished excavation data held in York Archaeological Trust archives with the historical and cartographic sources.
Through the use of GIS, the project aims to provide a more nuanced understanding of the patterns of land use (houses and workshops, burgage plots, streets) which formed the framework of space in the city. Through the material culture (in all forms from buildings to artefacts) the aim is to gain an insight into the character of a neighbourhood at a given time
