About
I hold degrees in Philosophy and Literature (MA, University of Warwick), and Comparative Literature, Art History and Aesthetics (BA, University of Oslo). My MA dissertation was entitled ‘The Dilemma of the Reader’s Guide. The Closed Text and the Active Reader’, and was supervised by Dr. Eileen John.
I am currently researching my PhD in the department of English and Related Literature at the University of York, under the supervision of Dr. Richard Walsh. My thesis seeks to map out the genre of the study guide to literary works. It focuses on the study guide as a reflection of a tension between self education and the strict confines of the pedagogical format. As such it is part of two contradicting traditions – that of reading as a form of self development in terms of Bildung, and that of a larger institutional apparatus including A-level examination boards, universities and the publishing industry.
