About
I started my PhD research on early modern travelling players and performance space in October 2008 after completing a BA in Archaeology in 2006 and an MA in Medieval Studies in 2007. My thesis seeks to challenge prevailing conventions of a London- and Shakespearian/ Marlovian-based Elizabethan theatre. Building on themes I explored in my MA thesis on the Medieval Mystery Cycles of Beverley, Chester and York, I will integrate archaeological, historical and theatrical practices and produce a clearer picture of provincial drama performed in multi-purpose spaces. The project will encorporate buildings survey of extant performance venues and the creation of interactive 3D virtual models, textual analysis of the Queen's Men's plays, and finally performance. I am supervised by Mike Cordner (TFTV) and Kate Giles (Archaeology).
I have directed and produced a number of shows for adults and children in York and Edinburgh. In 2006 I founded the award-winning Rubber Duck Theatre company (www.rubberducktheatre.co.uk). I have also worked for Out of the Blue Productions at the York Theatre Royal and Dixon Studio Theatre (2008) and Sputnik Enterprises at the Edinburgh Fringe (2003-6).
